Discipline and the Extraordinary

Wise woman says – To create a new habit attach it to an established habit

Tonight I participate in a discussion circle, an established habit with like-minded people
We discuss moral and spiritual lifestyles

Afterwards, I attach a new habit of going to the club to swim
Little voice says “maybe not”
Wise woman says – attach a new habit to an established habit

I get to the club, suit up, and entering the chilly water, begin to swim
One end of the pool to the other end, one end to the other, rhythmical breathing,
an established pattern, the body remembers

And it occurs to me that if this were the last spring I was alive
I would be doing this, would choose to do this, to be in the water and swim
from one end of the pool to the other, to the other, to the other……

Reflecting, I pick up my form, steady my pace, respect the water
and after a few more laps the extraordinary kicks in
I’m aware that it’s an energy bigger than me, that lives in and through me
taking me from one end of the pool to the other end of the pool to the other end

And my swim becomes extraordinary, big, full and consciously alive!
Discipline and the extraordinary
